HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison University's transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision kicks off in a big way, as it hosts Middle Tennessee out of Conference USA in the 2022 season opener on Saturday, Sept. 3 at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field. Kickoff time is to be determined.
Â
It will be the first FBS home game in program history and the second-ever meeting between the programs. JMU defeated the Blue Raiders 24-22 on Sept. 10, 1994 in the only previous matchup while both were members of the FCS (formerly Division I-AA).
Â
Since 1979, 29 teams have transitioned from FCS to FBS prior to JMU. After the NCAA instituted a two-year transition to FBS in 1997, JMU will become just the second transitioning program to host another FBS school in its season opener, joining Buffalo in 1999.
Â
As a result of the game addition, JMU will no longer host Weber State. Previously scheduled non-conference games on Sept. 10 at home against Norfolk State and on Nov. 5 at Louisville remain on the 2022 schedule.
Â
JMU went 12-2 in its final FCS season, reaching the national semifinals for the fifth time in the last six years. The Dukes are 33-5 in three seasons under Head Coach Curt Cignetti.

The 2022 JMU football season will be presented by CarMax. Information on season ticket sales will be available in the near future.
