RICHMOND, Va. – The James Madison baseball team had a pair of weekly awards handed out to them by the league, as redshirt sophomore
Donovan Burke earned Pitcher of the Week honors and redshirt junior
Trevon Dabney was tabbed as Player of the Week, the Colonial Athletic Association announced Monday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, Burke and Dabney were named two of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week.
The Dukes went 4-0 during the week with a win against George Mason and a series sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson to move to 4-3 overall.
Burke had a dominant showing on Saturday, as he took a perfect game into the seventh inning backed by a career-high 13 strikeouts. The lefty pitcher went seven innings, also a career-high, in his second start of the season as he struck out at least two batters in every inning he pitched except one. It was the most strikeouts thrown by a JMU or Colonial Athletic Association pitcher since Kevin Kelly tossed 13 at Towson on May 2, 2019.
Dabney was nearly impossible to get out, as he went 8-for-12 with 10 runs scored, a double, three home runs, and nine RBI's while also drawing four walks and being hit by a pitch four times. All in all, he reached base in 16 plate appearances as nineteen of the Dukes' 45 runs during the week were either scored by or batted in by Dabney.
The utility player tied his career-high in runs scored on Friday, scoring four times while also tying his career-high in hits with three. He then once again tied his career-high in hits on Saturday, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. He capped off the week by recording his first career multi-home run game, hitting a solo shot and a grand slam, and collecting a career-high six RBI's to lead the Dukes to a 15-5 win on Sunday.
The Dukes will be back in action on Tuesday, March 1 as they host VMI at Veterans Memorial Park. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.
