RICHMOND, Va. – After trailing 2-1 entering the seventh inning, the James Madison baseball team scored six runs and never looked back as they took down Richmond, 9-2, at Pitt Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Dukes extend their win streak to six games and move to 6-3, while the Spiders have their own six-game win streak snapped and drop to 6-2.
Redshirt sophomore
Sean Culkin earned his first career win out of the bullpen, while sophomore
Ryan Murphy started and went a career-high five innings while scattering four hits. At the plate, redshirt sophomore
Chase DeLauter led the Dukes by going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and two runs scored and knocked in.
How It Happened
The Spiders got on the board first in the first on a double down the left field line for a 1-0 lead. It took until the sixth for the Dukes to get anything really going, as freshman
Jason Schiavone led off with a double and came around to score two batters later on a sacrifice fly by redshirt sophomore
Mason Dunaway. Richmond regained the lead though in the home half of the sixth after leading off with a double and scoring on a wild pitch to lead 2-1. It was the first UR hit since the second inning.
After redshirt junior
Trevon Dabney, who had a streak of 11 straight plate appearances stemming back to Sunday snapped during the game, walked with one down, DeLauter hit a deep home run to right to give JMU a 3-2 lead. Redshirt junior
Kyle Novak hit his first home run of the season two batters later before redshirt sophomore
Jacob Steinberg doubled in a run after a
Jason Schiavone walk. Dunaway would cap off the six-run inning with his second home run in as many games to bring Steinberg around.
The Dukes added a pair of runs in the eighth on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly to lead 9-2.
The JMU bullpen came through, as five different relievers tossed the final four innings and struck out five while giving up a run and only three hits to secure the win.
