Trimble’s Two-Run Single Leads the Dukes Past Winthrop in Extra Innings

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Freshman Fenwick Trimble scored two runs on a single in the top of the 11^th inning to help lead James Madison baseball to a 10-8 victory over Winthrop in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Dukes move to 11-9 while the Eagles fall to 5-13.

Sophomore Nick Hammer started for JMU and went 1.2 innings and struck out one. Sophomore Joe Vogatsky earned his second win with two scoreless innings of relief and five strikeouts. Redshirt junior Kyle Novak led the Dukes at the plate, going 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI's.

How It Happened
The Dukes got out to an early 3-0 lead after scoring one in the first inning on a passed ball, and then adding two more in the second. Redshirt junior Nick Zona and Novak both singled in runs to put the Dukes up three.

Winthrop responded in the home half of the second, first scoring on a sacrifice fly and a single, before taking the lead 4-3 on a two-run triple.

The Eagles added a run in the fifth on a single to extend their lead to 5-3.

In the eighth inning, the Dukes were able to string together three runs to take the lead. After redshirt sophomore Chase DeLauter earned a walk to lead off the inning, Novak reached on a fielding error to put two runners on. Winthrop then committed an error in the outfield to let DeLauter score on redshirt junior Carson Bell's at bat. Trimble then tied the game at five on the next at bat with a sacrifice fly to score Novak. Classmate Ryan Dooley then gave the Dukes the 6-5 lead on another Winthrop error.

The Dukes added two runs in the ninth inning off singles from Novak and Bell to increase the lead to 8-5. Winthrop then scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and force extras.

After a scoreless tenth inning, the Dukes were able to score two runs in the eleventh on a single off the bat of Trimble to give JMU a 10-8 lead. Vogatsky was able to pitch a scoreless 11^th inning and close the book on the series finale.

Game Notes

Kyle Novak has now reached base in 17 consecutive games.
Winthrop committed five errors during the game.
Fenwick Trimble knocked in three runs.
