HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshman
Fenwick Trimble provided the heroics on Tuesday afternoon, hitting a walk off double into the left center gap to give James Madison a 7-6 victory against Longwood at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
The Dukes earn their first walk off win since May 2, 2021, as they move to 14-10 on the year. Longwood falls to 12-13.
Â
Redshirt junior
Lliam Grubbs went a career-high 3.2 innings, striking out three on the way to his first win of the season. Freshman
Todd Mozoki made his first career start and went two innings with four strikeouts. Trimble went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double, two RBI's, and three walks.
Â
How It Happened
In a back-and-forth game, Longwood took the first lead by scoring four unearned runs with two outs in the second inning for a 4-0 lead. The Dukes put up four runs of their own in the third to tie the game, as freshman
Jason Schiavone led off the inning with his first career home run to put the Dukes on the board. Redshirt sophomore
Chase DeLauter doubled in the second run of the inning before scoring on a bases loaded walk drawn by Trimble. The Dukes then tied the game at four-all when redshirt junior
Kyle Novak scored on a wild pitch.
Â
The Lancers retook the lead in the fourth inning, scoring a run on a groundout after a leadoff triple. JMU then took its first lead of the game in the bottom half of the inning when two runs came across the plate on a fielding error with the bases loaded for a 6-5 lead.
Â
It was once again a tied game in the eighth inning as Longwood tied the game at six apiece on a sacrifice fly. That was all the Lancers would get for the remainder of the game as Grubbs, who came into the game just prior to the sacrifice fly, only allowed two base runners on a hit and a walk over 3.2 innings of relief.
Â
The Dukes battled until the 11
th inning came where all it took was four batters to end the game. After the first two batters were retired, redshirt junior
Carson Bell singled through the left side and represented the winning run. Trimble then stepped up and took the second pitch into the left center gap, scoring Bell from first and giving the Dukes a 7-6 victory.
