HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison field hockey Head Coach
Christy Morgan has released the 2022 schedule, highlighted by five opponents who qualified for the 2021 NCAA tournament.
Â
"I'm excited about the challenge of the 2022 schedule," Morgan said. "We as a staff worked hard to get commitments from the best teams in the country to give us the best shot to compete in the NCAAs. I feel that this coming season we have a team that is committed to high performance and discipline and is willing to sacrifice in order to prepare for the best. It's an exciting time for JMU hockey!"
Â
The Dukes will be playing the 2022 season as an independent team and will play 17 games, including seven home matches. An emphasis was placed upon building a schedule for possible NCAA at-large consideration.
Â
"Coach Morgan and her staff have built an impressive schedule this year, filled with high RPI programs across the best conferences in the sport with a chance to position the team for postseason play if they find success" Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne said. "It's not ideal to be in the situation of playing as an independent, but we were exhaustive in pursuing options, and, unfortunately, the right opportunity did not line up. However, we view this as a short-term arrangement for one season and feel confident about the long-term scenarios for this program."
Â
JMU will face eight teams that finished in the top 25 of the final NFHCA Poll, led by Rutgers who finished first in the poll. The Dukes will also face nine teams who finished top 30 in the RPI and five teams that qualified for the 2021 NCAA tournament.
Â
The 2022 slate is set to begin at home on Friday, August 26 against Richmond, followed by a home game against Bucknell on Sunday, August 28.
Â
The Dukes will then take on two familiar in-state foes, Old Dominion on Friday, Sept. 2 and Virginia at home on Sunday, Sept. 4. The Dukes faced Old Dominion in the 2021 season, when they lost in a close 3-2 game. This will be the first time JMU and Virginia have faced off since 2016, where the Dukes came out on top 4-3 in overtime.
Â
Louisville, Ky. is the next stop for the Dukes, who will take on Louisville on Friday, Sept. 9 and Bellarmine on Saturday, Sept. 10. The Dukes met Louisville in the last home game of the 2021 season, when they held off the No. 4 Cardinals until overtime.
Â
Up next, JMU will be back home for three matches against William & Mary (9/16), Liberty (9/18) and Saint Francis (9/28). Liberty was last year's runner up in the NCAA Tournament, falling to Northwestern 2-0 to end the season.
Â
The Dukes will then go back on the road, where they will take on Duke (9/25), Syracuse (10/2) and Iowa (10/9). JMU has not faced Syracuse since September 1995, when the Dukes came out on top 3-0.Â
Â
JMU will then meet Wake Forest on Sunday, October 16 before taking a trip across the country to take on three California schools. The Dukes will start off at Stanford on Thursday, Oct. 20, followed by UC Davis on Friday, Oct. 21 and finally California on Sunday, Oct. 23. This will be the first time JMU has played Stanford since 1996 and California since 2007.
Â
The Dukes will finish off the regular season at Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 30. The two teams have not competed since 2014, when Rutgers came out on top 2-1.
Â
The team put forward an impressive 12-7 2021 season, including a perfect 6-0 in conference play to win the conference regular-season title.
Â
Returning for Dukes,
Eveline Zwager finished the 2021 season eighth in the nation in goals per game and seventh in points per game.
Caroline Cahill,
Diede Remijnse and
Kara McClure will also be key returners. The Dukes add four newcomers for the 2022 season.
