Dukes Split Day 1 in Wilmington with Extra-Inning Win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – James Madison softball split their games against UNCW, falling 2-1 in game one and winning 3-2 in extra innings in game two on Saturday at Boseman Field.

The Dukes moved to 15-14 (4-1 CAA) and the Seahawks are now 21-7 (3-2 CAA).

GAME 1: JMU 1, UNCW 2
UNCW got on the board first in the bottom of the second and JMU was unable to respond until the fifth. Isabelle Fishman hit an RBI double down the left field line to allow Lauren Fulton to score the sole run for the Dukes.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Seahawks rallied to take the lead, and the Dukes were unable to respond.

It was a battle of the pitchers in game one, with Alissa Humphrey tallying six strikeouts. She only allowed three hits and only walked two batters, while UNCW pitcher Emily Winstead allowed two hits and walked two batters.

GAME 2: JMU 3, UNCW 2
The Dukes went head-to-head with the Seahawks in the second game. UNCW got on the board first off of a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fourth.

Lexi Rogers responded in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to tie the game. Both teams continued performing well on defense and took the game to extra innings.

The game remained tied into the ninth, when a wild pitch sent Morgan Mesaros home to give the Dukes the lead. Hallie Hall followed that by driving Hannah Shifflett home with a single to make it a 3-1 lead in the top of the ninth.

UNCW tallied another run in the bottom of the ninth, but Humphrey came in clutch and struck out the final batter to secure the win for JMU.

Alexis Bermudez racked up six strikeouts for the Dukes across 8.1 innings before Humphrey closed out the game.

The Dukes will be closing out the weekend at UNCW with the rubber match of the conference series on Sunday at noon. The game will be streamed on FloSoftball.
