Masterpiece from Murphy Leads Dukes to Win Over Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. — Sophomore Ryan Murphy took a no hitter into the seventh inning, as he put together a pitching masterpiece for a series finale win over Presbyterian on Sunday morning at the PC Baseball Complex.Â
Â
The Dukes took home the 3-0 victory and move to 24-20, while the Blue Hose fall to 21-22.Â
Â
Murphy went a career-high eight innings and struck out four, scattering two hits. Redshirt junior Lliam Grubbs earned his fourth save of the season. Redshirt freshman Grant Painter led the Dukes at the plate, getting three hits for the second game in a row and scored a run.Â
Â
How It Happened
Murphy retired the first six batters he faced before allowing a walk to begin the third inning. He then retired the next 13 batters, never facing more than three batters in any inning of the game until the seventh inning.Â
Â
The Blue Hose were able to get their first hit in the seventh, but once again went down in order as freshman Jason Schiavone caught his eighth stealer of the season. In the eighth inning, Murphy faced more than three batters for the first time in the game as Presbyterian pushed a runner to second base. A strikeout from Murphy would end the threat and keep the hosts scoreless.Â
Â
The Dukes' run support for Murphy came in the fifth and ninth innings. After back-to-back singles from freshman Ryan Dooley and Painter, redshirt junior Trevon Dabney doubled and scored both of them to give JMU a 2-0 lead. Classmate Kyle Novak then singled Dabney in to increase the lead to 3-0.
Â
In the ninth, Schiavone doubled in Dooley for an additional run and a 4-0 lead before Grubbs came in and tossed a perfect bottom of the ninth to secure the win.
