HARRISONBURG, Va. - Forward
Mezie Offurum has joined the James Madison men's basketball team for the 2022-23 season, Head Coach
Mark Byington announced on Tuesday.
Â
Offurum comes to Harrisonburg with one year of eligibility remaining after two strong seasons at Mount St. Mary's. This past season, as one of two players on the roster to start every game, he averaged 11.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals on his way to Third Team All-Northeast Conference honors.
Â
"I am very excited about Mezie coming to play for us next year and he will have a huge impact on our program," Byington said. "He is extremely athletic and can play four different positions on offense - I love his versatility and offensive skill package. On defense, he will be one of the top defenders in our league and able to guard all five positions."
Â
As a junior, in his first season at The Mount, Offurum averaged 9.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals and started all 23 contests. He also racked up 16 points and eight rebounds in the Mountaineers' NEC title game victory over Bryant, earning an NEC All-Tournament Team nod along the way, then tallied 10 points and a career-high 16 boards against Texas Southern in the NCAA First Four.
Â
The 6'8" Germantown, Md. native spent two years at George Washington prior to The Mount, seeing action in 45 games for the Colonials. He also averaged 11.8 points and 6.7 rebounds as he helped lead Georgetown Prep to back-to-back Interstate Athletic Conference titles.
Â
Offurum is joining a JMU roster that returns more than 80% of its scoring from the 2021-22 campaign - the Dukes have also already
added incoming freshman forward Jerell Roberson and
former South Dakota State star Noah Freidel.
