HARRISONBURG, Va. – As the nation marks 50 years of Title IX, the federal law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sex in regard to participation in educational programs or activities, James Madison University's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will recognize the landmark legislation and the impact that it has had on women's sports programs at JMU.
Â
"JMU enjoys a rich history and tradition in our women's sports programs, perhaps as rich as any department in the country," Director of Athletics
Jeff Bourne said. "We pride ourselves on the accomplishments of our women's program and have historically emphasized resources in terms of personnel, infrastructure and financial resources to ensure that we provide equal opportunities. We are excited for this year-long celebration of our history and our future."
Â
During the 2022-2023 athletics year, each women's program will have a designated contest to recognize the impact of Title IX on that program. During the week leading up to the event, content will be posted on JMUSports.com and the team's social media accounts to mark the occasion.
Â
Other major departmental events include:
- A Dukes Lead event with the Women's Sports Foundation in February
- A Brunch on the Bases event at a home softball game in spring of 2023
- Student-athlete giveaways to display and represent the year-long recognition
- Facility signage, public address announcements and select fan giveaways
- Inclusion at major departmental events, such as Hall of Fame ceremony, Duke Club events, National Girls and Women in Sports Day, etc.
Â
All events, whether department-wide or team-specific, will include a "50 Years of Title IX" logo developed by JMU Athletics.
