RICHMOND, Va. - The James Madison men's golf team opened up its 2022-23 campaign in strong fashion this week, taking home ninth place on Tuesday afternoon at the VCU Shootout, hosted on the par-72, 6,927-yard Tuckahoe Creek Course at the Country Club of Virginia.
As a team, the Dukes carded rounds of 284-276-283, holding onto a tie for ninth on the 14-team leaderboard with a late flurry of birdies on Tuesday. JMU's second round of 276 (-12) also matched the fifth-lowest round in program history.
Three players - sophomore
Daniel Cheng, senior
Nick Schlickenrieder and freshman
Owen Kose in his collegiate debut - led the way for JMU, posting identical 54-hole scores of 209 (-7) to finish tied for 19th among 75 entrants.
Cheng, who shot 69-67-73 on the week, notched new career bests for 54 holes and a single round, bouncing back from an opening bogey to rack up six birdies in his second-round 67 (-5), while Schlickenrieder (69-68-72) added his own career-low 54-hole total along the way.
Kose provided his own highlight, following Monday rounds of 73-70 with a final-round, bogey-free 66 (-6) that saw him play his final nine holes in five-under as he vaulted up the leaderboard. The performance was tied for the seventh-lowest round in program history and matched the JMU record for the lowest round to par every shot by a freshman.
Freshmen
