James Madison (1-0) vs. Norfolk State (0-1)
Saturday, September 10, 2022
Kickoff: 4:00 PM ET
Harrisonburg, Va. | Bridgeforth Stadium
Saturday marks the third meeting between JMU and Norfolk State, with the Dukes leading 2-0.
While there have been two games, only five quarters have been played, after the most recent meeting in 2018 was called after 15 minutes due to weather.
JMU won the inaugural meeting, 75-14, in 2017 at home after accumulating 728 total yards, which was one yard shy of the JMU single-game record. That included rushing for 472 yards, fourth most in school history.
The following season, JMU led 17-0 after one but multiple lightning delays forced the game to be called.
Norfolk State has gained just 120 yards in the five quarters played against the Dukes.
JMU BEGINS FBS ERA WITH BIG WIN
JMU left no doubt in its FBS debut last Saturday in a 44-7 blowout win against Middle Tennessee.
Todd Centeio threw for 287 yards and six touchdowns while rushing for 110 to lead the JMU offense.
Kris Thornton caught 11 passes for 145 yards and three touchdowns, while Reggie Brown had five grabs for 78 yards and a pair of scores.
JMU ran for 261 total yards, as Percy Agyei-Obese returned from injury to rush for 82 yards.
The Dukes outgained the Blue Raiders, 548-119, holding MTSU to just 12 rushing yards.
The defense tallied 15.0 tackles for loss and four sacks. Taurus Jones had 2.5 TFL, a forced fumble and a recovery, while Isaac Ukwu had 2.0 TFL and a sack. Jailin Walker also had a career-high nine stops.
After a scoreless first, JMU scored 37 straight points in a span of 19:19 to bridge the second and third quarters.
CENTEIO RECEIVES MULTIPLE HONORS, ADDED TO WATCH LIST
Quarterback Todd Centeio received quite the national attention following JMU's season-opening victory, which included being added to a prestigious watch list.
Centeio became the first JMU quarterback to throw for six touchdowns while also rushing for more than 100 yards in a single game. He's also the first FBS quarterback to achieve those numbers since Louisville's Lamar Jackson in 2016.
He, along with wide receiver Kris Thornton, were named to the Pro Football Network's Week 1 College Football Team of the Week, and the signal caller was also recognized amongst the Allstate Sugar Bowl's Manning Award Stars of the Week.
Centeio also received a helmet sticker from ESPN anchor Matt Barrie on College Football Final.
Tuesday evening, Centeio was added to the Davey O'Brien Award midseason watch list after being selected to the Davey O'Brien Great 8 List for week one.
THORNTON EARNS DC TOUCHDOWN CLUB HONOR
For the second time in his career and the first at the FBS level, wide receiver Kris Thornton was named DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week.
His week-one totals were just one catch and 10 yards shy of career highs.
It was his fifth 2+ touchdown game and his fourth over 100 receiving yards since the start of the 2021 season.
 CAREER DAYS ON DEFENSE
In JMU's season-opening win against Middle Tennessee, numerous defenders turned in career outings.
Making their first starts at linebacker, Jailin Walker had nine tackles with a TFL while Taurus Jones made seven stops with 2.5 TFL, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Jamree Kromah had 1.5 tackles for loss and his first full sack.
