HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison women's tennis opened its home slate with a commanding 7-0 win against George Washington on Saturday afternoon at the East Campus Tennis Courts.
The Dukes improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Colonials dropped to 0-1. It was JMU's 10th straight victory against GW, dating back to the 2009-10 season. It was also the fourth time JMU held the Colonials without a single point.
JMU earned the win by way of three doubles victories and six straight-set singles triumphs.
In doubles play,
Daria Afanasyeva and
Reka Matko cruised to a 6-1 victory against Charlotte Bell and Lindsay Thompson on court three to gain the advantage. Shortly after,
Daria Munteanu and
Daniela Voloh clinched the doubles point on court two with a 6-1 win over Sarah Bodewes and Alejandra Ramirez.
JMU capped off doubles play on court one, as
Kylie Moulin and
Ines Oliveira took down the doubles pair of Gabriela Giraldo and Stella Wiesemann in a hard-fought battle, 6-4.
In singles play, Oliveira was quick to double the match lead, as she defeated Thompson 6-1, 6-3 on court three. JMU made it a 3-0 match on court one, as Moulin secured a 6-2, 6-1 win against Wiesemann.
Afanasyeva clinched the team win on court two, as she battled against Giraldo, ultimately coming out on top in a 6-4, 6-2 triumph.
In JMU's final three singles matches, the Dukes conceded a total of eight games to complete the 7-0 win.
Voloh added to the lead on court four, taking a 6-1, 6-2 win from Bodewes. Munteanu earned her first collegiate dual-match win, as well as home triumph on court five, breezing past Ramirez, 6-0, 6-3. Matko joined Munteanu as a first-time home victor, dispatching Bell by a score of 6-2, 6-0 on court six.
Match Notes
- Daniela Voloh moved into a tie for fourth place at JMU with 75 career singles victories, matching Kimmy Herrock (2014-18). Voloh is now just 11 wins shy of Emma Peterson (2015-19), who has a JMU-record 86 singles victories.
- Daria Afanasyeva also moved into the top 10 in singles wins, tying Susie Peeling (1981-85) and Sheri Puppo (1997-01) in 10th with 59.
- Afanasyeva rose into a tie for sixth in total victories, with 125, tying Herrock. Voloh is also fifth with 133 total wins, which is just 32 shy of Jona Roka's record (165) that she set in 2021. Additionally, Moulin needs just six more total wins to enter the top 10 as well.
