LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – James Madison defensive coordinator Bryant Haines was selected as one of 15 semifinalists for the 2023 Broyles Award, the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation announced Monday.
Â
The Broyles Award has been presented annually since 1996 to college football's top assistant coaches. Haines is the first JMU assistant coach to be named a semifinalist for the honor.
Â
Haines, who's in his fifth season at JMU and second leading the defense, has coached JMU to leading the FBS in four categories this season, which includes rushing defense (60.4), yards per rush allowed (2.02), tackles for loss (9.4) and sacks (4.0).
Â
The Dukes are also tied for 11th nationally in interceptions (13), 20th in scoring defense (18.9), tied for 21st in first-down defense (17.09) and tied for 22nd in defensive touchdowns (2).
Â
JMU's sacks total of 44 is tied for the Sun Belt Conference single-season record and ranks fifth all-time in JMU single-season history.
Â
Five finalists will be selected next week by distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the Football Writers Association of America.
