HARRISONBURG, Va. –
Kseniia Kozlova scored a season-best 20 points to help James Madison overcome an early deficit for a 75-56 victory over William & Mary on Thursday night at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
The Tribe (3-6) led 32-26 at the 5:15 mark of the second quarter, but JMU (7-3) found its groove and outscored W&M 49-24 the rest of the way for its fifth home win of the 2023-24 campaign. The Dukes dominated on the glass, out-rebounding William & Mary 53-30.
In addition to her 7-for-10 (.700) shooting night, Kozlova grabbed eight rebounds and recorded a block. Redshirt sophomore
Peyton McDaniel finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while junior
Ashanti Barnes registered a Division I career-high 14 points and nine boards. Redshirt junior
Jamia Hazell chipped in with 12 points and led the team with a season-high four assists.
William & Mary had three players score in double figures, paced by Bella Nascimento with 12, followed by Rebekah Frisby-Smith (11) and Nylah Young (10). Alexa Mikeska dished out four assists and totaled three boards in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- William & Mary opened strong, taking a seven-point lead (11-4) at the 5:35 mark.
- Hazell and Kozlova each scored four points in the opening frame as the Dukes trailed 20-15 at the break.
Second Quarter
- Redshirt junior Annalicia Goodman and Barnes both converted on and-ones, while Hazell knocked down a three-pointer from the wing to trail 28-26 with 6:02 on the clock.
- The Dukes held W&M without points for the last 5:15 as the Tribe held on to a 32-31 edge.
- McDaniel scored five points and pulled down four rebounds in the period.
Third Quarter
- Kozlova came out firing, putting in three physical layups and a pair of free throws to put the Dukes ahead 39-35 in the early going.
- JMU built a nine-point lead (52-43) with back-to-back layups with under two minutes to go.
- The Dukes would hold for a 52-44 advantage heading into the final frame.
Fourth Quarter
- JMU's lead grew to 10 (58-48) with a jump shot off the glass from sophomore Chloe Sterling.
- The Tribe would get no closer as Barnes and Kozlova combined for 14 points to give the Dukes a 75-56 victory.
- JMU out-rebound William & Mary 16-7, including 6-2 on the offensive glass.
- W&M was held scoreless for the final 3:11, while the Dukes finished on an 8-0 run in the final 2:37.
GAME NOTES
- James Madison leads the all-time series versus William & Mary, 78-17. Moreover, 95 meetings are the most among JMU opponents.
- The Dukes held an advantage over the Tribe in points in the paint (40-24), bench points (30-14), second chance points (12-6) and fast break points (11-0).
- McDaniel's double-double was her third this season and fourth of her career.
- W&M's 20 points in the first quarter are the most allowed by JMU in any first quarter this season.
- The last time four Dukes scored in double figures against a Division I team was at Marshall on Jan. 5: Kseniia Kozlova (17), Jamia Hazell (14), Peyton McDaniel (13) and Kiki Jefferson (11).
- JMU led for 19:51, while W&M was on top for 19:17.
- The victory was the Dukes' second this season after trailing at halftime. James Madison was behind Wake Forest, 24-23, before pulling out a 55-53 win on Dec. 3.
- JMU has now recorded four games this season with 50 or more rebounds. Additionally, the Dukes' defensive 39 boards against the Tribe are the most against a Division I opponent this season.
