HATTIESBURG, Miss. – In a game that was moved up three hours from the originally scheduled time and then featured an over four hour rain delay, James Madison baseball dropped the middle game of the series against Southern Miss, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park in Sun Belt Conference baseball.
The Dukes drop to 20-14, 5-7 SBC while the Golden Eagles improve to 21-12, 8-5 SBC.
Sophomore
Todd Mozoki started for the Dukes and tossed five scoreless innings with four strikeouts. At the plate, classmate
Coleman Calabrese led the way with a 1-for-3 effort at the plate and an RBI.
Will Armistead earned his first win of the season for USM behind three innings out of the bullpen.
How It Happened
Seventh Inning
After six scoreless innings where the teams combined for five total hits, lightning and rain caused a rain delay of four hours and 10 minutes. Once play resumed, Southern Miss scored five runs on a bases loaded, two-run single ahead of a three-run homer.
Eighth Inning
With one out, freshman
Wyatt Peifer doubled into left field. Calabrese then singled into center field to score Peifer and get the Dukes on the board and make it 5-1.
The hosts added two more runs on a two-run jack in the home half of the inning to increase their lead to 7-1.
Game Notes
- The game itself excluding the rain delay lasted two hours and 25 minutes
- Jason Schiavone snapped his 11-game reached base streak. During the streak he batted .342 with 10 RBI's and 12 runs scored.
- The loss is just the third middle game weekend series loss of the season and the first single game Saturday loss since the season-opening weekend at Florida State.
