4/19/2023 11:01:00 PM | Baseball
Â
The Dukes fall to 20-16 while the Terrapins move to 23-14.
Â
At the plate, sophomores Jason Schiavone (1-for-3, a home run, three RBI's) and Fenwick Trimble (1-for-3, a run scored, a double, three RBI's) led the way for JMU.
Â
Nigel Belgrave tossed an inning of relief for his fourth win of the year for the Terps
Â
How It Happened
First Inning
After graduate Jack Cone and redshirt junior Mason Dunaway led off by both getting on, Trimble laced his 17th double of the season into center field to score both. He moves three doubles away from entering the top 10 for most doubles in a single season at JMU. Trimble would move to third and score on a groundout by redshirt senior Kyle Novak for a 3-0 JMU lead.
Â
Maryland answered back with six runs in the home half, with the scoring beginning with a three-run homer and ending on a two-run shot. Sandwiched in between the jacks was an RBI single.
Â
Second Inning
Both team scored a run in the second, with the Dukes' coming from a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dunaway while UMD hit their third homer of the game.
Â
Third Inning
Down 7-4 heading into the third inning, Schiavone tied the game on one swing as he sent a 2-2 pitch over the center field wall for his fifth blast of the season.
Â
The Terps retook the lead in the home half with back-to-back doubles for a 9-7 lead.
Â
Fourth Inning
UMD extended its lead by four, loading the bases before drawing a walk to score the first run. The Terps' leading hitter, Nick Lorusso, cleared the bases and gave the hosts a 13-7 lead with a three-run triple.
Â
Fifth Inning
Redshirt senior Trevon Dabney doubled with one out in the inning, advanced to third on a flyout and then stole home as part of a double steal after sophomore Ryan Dooley drew a walk to make it 13-8.
Â
Sixth Inning
A ninth run was added for JMU after freshman Wyatt Peifer and Cone led off the inning with a pair of infield singles. Peifer then moved to third on a flyout before scoring on a groundout from Trimble.
Â
Seventh Inning
A second six-run inning was recorded by Maryland, using a sacrifice fly, a bunt single, a three-run homer and finally a bases loaded walk to score all its runs.
Â
Eighth Inning
JMU broke into double-digits after freshman Mike Mancini and Peifer drew walks to lead off the eighth. Redshirt sophomore Grant Painter stepped in to pinch hit and hit his first career home run as he took a 2-1 pitch over the left field wall to make it 19-12.
Â
Up Next
The Dukes return home for a weekend against Louisiana on April 21-23 at Veterans Memorial Park, with the opener scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday night. UL is coming off a win over No. 1 LSU on Tuesday evening.
