HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison field hockey Head Coach
Christy Morgan has released the 2023 schedule, highlighted by four opponents who qualified for the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
Â
"We are very excited about the challenging schedule that my staff and I created for the 2023 season," said Morgan. "It will be challenging and keep us on our toes all season long. Our schedule was created to give us an opportunity at an at-large bid to get into the NCAAs – it was not created to be easy. I think great teams love the challenge. They want to be great and are willing to work for it. Stay tuned for the best season ever!"
Â
The Dukes will be playing the 2023 season as an independent team and will play 18 games, including 10 home games. Ten home games are the most for the program since the 2015 season when 12 contests were held at the JMU Field Hockey Complex. Additionally, the Dukes will face two Mid-American Conference foes.
Â
James Madison will open the season with a pair of road games within the commonwealth, starting with William & Mary on Aug. 25 followed by Richmond on Aug. 27. The Dukes took down the Spiders 3-1 at the JMU Field Hockey Complex last year on Aug. 26 to open the 2023 season.
Â
JMU then welcomes Columbia for the Dukes' home opener on Friday, Sept. 1. Morgan and the Dukes head to Wake Forest next for a Sept. 3 meeting. Last year, James Madison blanked the #12 Demon Deacons 2-0 on Senior Day.
Â
The Dukes are set for a three-game homestand following their contest with Wake Forest, hosting App State (Sept. 8), Temple (Sept. 10), and Boston College (Sept. 17).
Â
JMU will hit the road for four games in late September into early October, first heading west to face two Power Five teams in Louisville (Sept. 22) and Indiana (Sept. 24). The Dukes fell to the #5 Cardinals 1-0 in Louisville last season in a tight defensive battle. The team then heads back east with stops at Monmouth (Sept. 29) and Villanova (Oct. 1).
Â
James Madison takes on Longwood (Oct. 6) and Duke (Oct. 8), before driving south for a matchup at Liberty on Oct. 15. JMU came away with a 4-2 win against the #25 Blue Devils on the road. The victory was James Madison's first over Duke since 2007 and its first in Durham, N.C. since 1995.
Â
The Dukes will stay home for the remaining four regular-season games. First JMU will take part in the Royal Rivalry as it faces Old Dominion on Oct. 22. Next, James Madison welcomes Virginia on Oct. 24 for another battle in the commonwealth. The Dukes suffered losses to both teams in 2022, falling to the Monarchs 6-1 and the Cavaliers 2-3 (OT).
Â
Georgetown treks to Harrisonburg, Va. for an Oct. 29 meeting with the Dukes. The final game of the regular season is slated for Nov. 4 when JMU hosts Queens (N.C.) for a Saturday afternoon contest.
Â
James Madison finished the 2022 season with a 10-7 record, including four wins over top-25 teams, and a perfect 6-0 mark at home.
Â
The 2023 fall roster will include seven seniors and one graduate student.
Alice Roeper returns after posting 13 points in her freshman campaign, while goaltender
