HARRISONBURG, Va. – After a season that included a run to the Sun Belt Conference championship game and multiple team and individual records, James Madison women's soccer has announced its 2023 schedule on Monday afternoon by Head Coach
Joshua Walters, Sr.
"As a program, we are looking to grow and take the next steps coming off a successful 2022 campaign and I think this schedule reflects that," said Walters. "We always strive to play exciting games and expose our team to a variety of challenges. This fall we will have depth and quality in the squad and I can't wait to see them compete against some of the best programs in the country."
The Dukes will begin the 2023 slate by hosting Charlotte (Aug. 17) and UNCG (Aug. 20) as part of the JMU Fairfield by Marriott Invitational. Once wrapping up the opening weekend, JMU will head down to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech on Aug. 24 before returning to Sentara Park on Aug. 27 for a tilt with Maryland.
Returning to the West Coast for the first time since 2019, the Dukes will close August and open September with a two-match trip to California. They will face St. Mary's College on Aug. 31 before taking on a Santa Clara team that is three seasons removed from a national championship on Sept. 3. A match with Georgetown set for Sept. 7 will follow the Santa Clara match, marking back-to-back games against teams that were seeded in last season's NCAA tournament. The Dukes will then close out the non-conference portion of the schedule with a Sept. 10 showdown with Ohio in Harrisonburg.
Sun Belt play will begin for the Dukes on the road as they face Arkansas State on Sept. 15. They will have four more league games on the road, traveling to App State (Sept. 24), Louisiana (Sept. 30), defending champion Old Dominion (Oct. 8) and Georgia State (Oct. 19).
Marshall will serve as the first home Sun Belt match on Sept. 21, as ULM (Oct. 5), Texas State (Oct. 13) and Georgia Southern (Oct. 22) will all come to Harrisonburg before closing out the regular season with Coastal Carolina on Oct. 26.
The Sun Belt Championship will be played from Oct. 29-Nov. 5 in Foley, Ala.
"At the conclusion of this year's schedule, we will have now played all of the teams in the Sun Belt between last season and this," Walters added. "Already I can feel some fantastic rivalries forming in the conference and I know we have a few games circled that will tell us a lot about this year's team. We learned last year that our mentality has to grow on the road. Routines and habits for competing on the road in the Sun Belt are different from years past and developing them is an important aspect."
