HARRISONBURG, Va. - The James Madison men's basketball team welcomes two more frontcourt standouts, as
T.J. Bickerstaff and
Raekwon Horton will join the Dukes for the 2023-24 season, Head Coach
Mark Byington announced on Friday morning.
Â
Bickerstaff comes to JMU after spending the last two seasons at Boston College, where he started 43 of his 60 games with the Eagles. In his time in Chestnut Hill, the 6'9" Bickerstaff averaged 5.8 points and 6.3 rebounds, shooting 47.6% from the floor this past season.
Â
"This is the third time I have recruited TJ and I'm ecstatic to finally get the chance to coach him," Byington said. "He will fit into our style perfectly - I anticipate him having a great year for JMU, followed by a long and successful pro career."
Â
Prior to his time at BC, Bickerstaff had two strong years at Drexel, averaging 4.8 points and 3.5 rebounds as a freshman before putting up 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds the following season as he helped lead the Dragons to the 2020-21 Colonial Athletic Association title, shooting 51.3% from the field and 83.9% from the free throw line along the way.
Â
Horton joins the Dukes after two years at College of Charleston, where he played in all but one game across two successful seasons for the Cougars. He averaged 5.3 points and 3.5 rebounds in less than 20 minutes per game in the Lowcountry, including a 10-point, five-rebound performance at North Carolina this past season that was highlighted by a SportsCenter Top 10 dunk in transition.
Â
"Sometimes the best way to know that somebody is really good is to coach against them and scout them - I had that opportunity with Raekwon," Byington said. "He is known for his three-point shooting and his defense, but we are excited for him to show his entire game. I love the fact that he has been around winning and a good team, so he knows what it takes to be at that level."
Â
Before arriving in Charleston, Horton wrapped up a stellar prep career that saw him play at both Vermont Academy and W.J. Keenan High School, where he was twice the South Carolina 3A State Player of the Year, averaged 21.9 points and 9.5 rebounds as a senior and led two state championship squads. He was also named a McDonald's All-America nominee in 2020.
Â
The pair will join three other summer transfers and incoming freshman Jaylen Carey, as well as seven returning letterwinners, as the Dukes look to build on the 2022-23 season that saw them rack up 22 wins, the most for the program since the historic 1981-82 campaign.
