NEW ORLEANS – James Madison linebacker Aiden Fisher was tabbed Sun Belt Conference Special Teams Player of the Week in a vote by the league's football media.
This is Fisher's first career weekly honor and follows a big performance on defense and special teams in JMU's 36-35 comeback win at Virginia last Saturday.
In the victory, Fisher blocked a first-quarter punt in the end zone, resulting in a D'Angelo Ponds blocked punt for a touchdown that gave JMU a 14-0 lead. Fisher also stepped into a primary defensive role in the second half, finishing the game with a team and career-high nine tackles with a quarterback hurry.
He and the JMU defense limited UVA to just 18 rushing yards on 35 carries, as the Dukes rallied from 11 down in the fourth quarter for the program's third all-time victory against a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Fisher and the Dukes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 when they travel to Troy to begin Sun Belt play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) at Veterans Memorial Stadium and will be televised nationally on NFL Network.
