HARRISONBURG, Va. –
Hevynne Bristow scored a career-high 20 points to pace all players as James Madison women's basketball defeated Old Dominion, 72-64, on Saturday afternoon inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
JMU (14-5, 6-1 SBC) shot 48.8 percent (21-of-43) and outscored ODU's (12-5, 4-3 SBC) bench 34-14. The Dukes also made 26-of-38 (.684) from the free throw line, having drawn 30 fouls in the contest.
Bristow connected on 7-of-9 (.778) from the field and grabbed four rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. Redshirt sophomore
Peyton McDaniel finished with 14 points, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers, and tied her career-high in steals with four. Junior
Ashanti Barnes led all players with 10 boards to tie her career high, while redshirt juniors
Olivia Mullins and
Jamia Hazell recorded nine points.
En'Dya Buford (18) and Brenda Fontana (10) had double-digit outings for the Monarchs. Buford also led Old Dominion in assists (3) and steals (3). Simone Cunningham wrangled in seven rebounds and had six points in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- The Dukes opened the frame with a 7-2 lead before Old Dominion cut its deficit to one, 9-8, at the media timeout.
- JMU took an 18-13 advantage after holding the Monarchs without a made field goal for the last 3:31 of play.
- Senior Hevynne Bristow scored six points to pace all players.
- ODU finished the first shooting 3-of-14 (.214) from the field.
Second Quarter
- Baskets from junior Mikaya Tynes and redshirt sophomore Peyton McDaniel put the Dukes ahead 22-15 early in the period.
- The Monarchs fought to get within two (24-22) until redshirt junior Olivia Mullins knocked down a triple to make it 27-25 at the media timeout.
- Bristow earned a trip to the line where she sank 2-of-2 to give JMU a 34-25 lead at the 2:01 mark.
- ODU finished the half with five unanswered points to trail 38-34 at halftime.
Third Quarter
- Both teams experienced scoring droughts early, with the Monarchs going without a made field goal for 3:09 heading into the media timeout.
- The Dukes broke through with a 9-0 run to go ahead 49-37 near the halfway point, which coincided with a 0-for-9 stretch for ODU.
- JMU led by as much as 13 (56-43), but Old Dominion made it an eight-point game (56-48) with one quarter to go.
- Bristow recorded eight points on 3-of-3 from the field in the frame.
Fourth Quarter
- James Madison built a 10-point lead, 61-51, at the 7:12 mark.
- ODU responded with a 6-0 run to force a JMU timeout.
- The Dukes went ahead 65-57 with free throws from redshirt junior Jamia Hazell with 4:49 to go.
- Old Dominion made 2-of-13 (.154) down the stretch from the field.
- Barnes and McDaniel each scored five points in the quarter, while the team made nine shots from the line to hold on for a 72-64 victory.
GAME NOTES
- James Madison trails in the all-time series against Old Dominion, 29-53, but has won the last nine meetings.
- With today's win, JMU leads ODU 6.5 to 2.5 in the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge. The Dukes have now won all seven basketball matchups between the men's and women's programs dating back to last season.
- Bristow's previous career-high in points was 11 – accomplished twice in her career – with the most recent performance at Southern Miss on Jan. 11.
- Barnes tied her career-high in rebounds with 10. This is the third time in her career she has achieved this, with the most recent being against Arkansas State on Jan 4.
- Mullins set a season-high with four rebounds. Her previous season high was three, which she recorded twice with the most recent being against VCU on Nov. 19.
- JMU held ODU to 5-of-29 (.172) from behind the arc. The clip is the Monarchs' second-lowest of the year behind a 3-for-19 (.158) effort at Marshall on Jan. 18.
- The Dukes out-rebounded ODU 39-38, the 17th time JMU has out-rebounded its opponent this season.
