HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison cornerback D'Angelo Ponds added one more postseason accolade to his ledger, as he was selected to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team.
Ponds the first player in JMU history to be named a Freshman All-American by the FWAA. This is Ponds' third such honor in 2023, as he was also tabbed to the On3 and College Football Network Freshman All-America squads.
Additionally, Ponds was named a semifinalist for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, another first for the JMU program. A Second Team All-Sun Belt corner, he finished his rookie campaign with 51 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions, 13 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries.
Ponds ranked second in the Sun Belt and tied for 13th nationally with 15 total passes defended and led the league with 12 during conference play.
