JMU HEADS TO NORFOLK
- The James Madison Dukes (17-2, 5-2 SBC) are making their second trip to Norfolk, Va. this season as they prepare for another edition of the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge against the Old Dominion Monarchs (5-14, 1-6 SBC). This will be the second game of a three-game series between the in-state rivals.Â
- Tip-off at Chartway Arena is set for Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. The game is the second-to-last game of the month of January for JMU. The Dukes are 4-2 in the month of January. They finished November 7-0, and were 6-0 in December).
- JMU is currently in second place in the Sun Belt Conference standings with a 5-2 record in conference play. App State, their Saturday opponent, leads the standings. On the other hand, Old Dominion finds itself at the bottom with a 1-6 record in conference play, sharing the last position. Â
- This matchup carries substantial significance for both teams – the Dukes are vying to secure the top spot, while the Monarchs aim to shift the momentum of their season as they approach the second half of the conference schedule.
TOWNEBANK ROYAL RIVALRY CHALLENGE
- Points are awarded for head-to-head competition or for the best finish in mutual conference championship events in sports where head-to-head competition does not occur. Half points are granted in case of a tie. Both regular season and postseason matches are included in head-to-head calculations.Â
- Additional points for academic achievements and competitions will also be part of the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge. At the end of each school year, the school that earns the most points will hoist the Royal Rivalry Trophy, which is currently being designed by students in both schools' art departments.
- JMU leads ODU in the 2023-24 edition of the challenge, 6.5-2.5.Â
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING VS. ODU
- Historically, JMU and ODU have faced each other 89 times.
- The first matchup occurred on January 14, 1972, and the most recent one took place on December 9, 2023. This game on Wednesday will be the 90th meeting of the two teams.
- The Dukes are set to play ODU a total of three times this season. Throughout the 52-year history of the matchup, there have been eight seasons in which the Dukes and Monarchs faced each other three times. JMU has never achieved a three-game sweep against ODU in a single season. However, the Monarchs accomplished this feat during the 1995-1996 season.
- ODU has dominated on its home court in Norfolk with a 9-35 record against JMU.
- Meanwhile, 21 of the Dukes' 31 wins (67%) have been in Harrisonburg. JMU is 21-18 versus the Monarchs.
- The Dukes have won the last five games, dating back to November 20, 2019. They are 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

SCOUTING OLD DOMINION
- Vasean Allette leads the team in scoring with an average of 17.6 points per game, followed by Chaunce Jenkins at 15.9 points per game. Tyrone Williams contributes 11.9 points per game.
- Despite an impressive 91-66 win over Marshall last week for their first conference win of the season, ODU experienced a significant setback in its game against ULM. ODU was outrebounded 28-9 in the first half, with ULM eventually dominating the boards 44-21 for the entire game.
- The win over Marshall ended a six-game losing streak, as they came away with a win in front of a lively crowd of 6,158.
- ODU dominated in key areas, outscoring Marshall 42-26 in the paint and winning the rebound battle 46-43. The team showcased impressive shooting percentages, making 50% of their overall shots, 43.5% from three-point range.
- The Dukes can look forward to yet another electrifying atmosphere in Norfolk, with ODU maintaining its position as the attendance leader in the conference (averaging 5,722 fans).
- In the last encounter, Old Dominion achieved a historic milestone by hosting the largest crowd ever at Chartway Arena in its 21-year history, boasting an impressive sell-out attendance of 8,504 enthusiastic spectators.

The Dukes
- The Dukes earned a 67-52 win in Harrisonburg over Marshall to cap off a four-game home stand. The Dukes took three-of-four at home.
- Xavier Brown made his first collegiate start versus the Thundering Herd, contributing seven points and four rebounds. He and Jaylen Carey provided vital minutes, combining for 17 points.Â
- Terrence Edwards Jr. led the team with 20 points, four rebounds, and five assists, while Noah Freidel added 14 points and eight rebounds.
- James Madison dominated various aspects, including points in the paint (38-10), steals (8-5), and fast break points (18-4). They forced 14 turnovers, resulting in 13 points.
- The Dukes' defense held Marshall to a season-low 52 points and allowed a field goal percentage of just 29.5%.
- T.J. Bickerstaff corralled double-digit rebounds (11) for the ninth time this season, he averages 8.9 rebounds per game.
- JMU entered the game losing its last two Saturday games (71-81 at Southern Miss on Saturday, Jan. 6; and a 55-59 home loss vs. App State on Saturday, Jan. 13).
- With the win over Marshall snapping that streak, the Dukes are now 4-2 on Saturdays.
