HISTORICALLY SPEAKING VS. THE CHANTICLEERS
JMU and Coastal Carolina have met three times before, with the Dukes taking all three contests.Â
Head Coach Mark Byington boasts a 2-0 record against the Chanticleers during his tenure.Â
The inaugural meeting took place on Jan. 8, 1987, resulting in a home victory for the Dukes, who maintain a 2-0 record in Harrisonburg.
In its last encounter on Feb. 11, 2023, JMU secured a 73-66 victory on the road.
The teams will play again exactly one month later on March 1, in Conway, S.C.
THE 411 ON CCU
The Chanticleers are coming off of a 85-83 overtime home win over Georgia State on Saturday, which snapped a three-game skid.
Coastal has gone on four-game losing streaks twice this season.
The Chanticleers rank 325th in the NCAA NET Rankings, the lowest ranking by any Sun Belt team.
In the win over Georgia State, Kevin Easley scored a career-high 28 points, shooting 11-of-15 from the field and contributing a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Facing a 13-point deficit with just under 12 minutes remaining, the Chants mounted an improbable comeback, ultimately securing an 85-83 overtime victory. John Ojiako had a game-high 15 rebounds, and the Chants had the advantage on the boards, 49-41.
THE POINT FOR JMU
On the other end of the NET Ranking spectrum, JMU is the highest-rated Sun Belt team, appearing at 65th this week.
Despite a tough 82-76 road loss to App State on Saturday, the Dukes are looking to bounce back and regain their momentum heading into the second half of their conference schedule.
Julien Wooden and T.J. Bickerstaff both reached 1,000 career points in the game against App State. JMU's roster now features five players who have achieved this milestone. This is the second-highest number of 1,000-point scorers on an active roster nationwide (St. John's, 6).
App State's defense held JMU to 42 percent shooting from the field and blocked 12 shots, with Justin Abson contributing a game-high eight blocks. The Mountaineers' defensive efforts proved crucial in securing a lead and pulling away for the eventual victory.
App State thrived from the free-throw line, converting 30 of 40 attempts (75 percent), playing a pivotal role in its overall scoring. In contrast, JMU had limited opportunities, attempting only 17 free throws and making 12 (70.6 percent).Â
The loss snapped the Dukes' three-game win streak, and gave them their third loss in seven games (4-3). They are 7-3 in their last 10.
At home, JMU is 9-1, while Coastal is 1-5 on the road.
