HARRISONBURG, Va. –
Alice Roeper scored twice on penalty strokes, while
Molly Schreiner recorded three saves for James Madison in a 3-0 shutout versus Kent State at the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Friday afternoon in Mid-American Conference field hockey action.
JMU (9-2, 4-0 MAC) held the Golden Flashes (3-9, 2-2 MAC) scoreless despite KSU registering 11 penalty corners. The Dukes are off to their best start through 11 games since 2008 when the team began the season 10-1.
In addition to Roeper's goals, senior
Cassidy Strittmatter produced the Dukes' third and final goal with an assist from sophomore
Ava Drexler-Amey.
For Kent State, Lieve Jansen made five stops, while Lauren Conroy was credited with a defensive save.
Quoting Head Coach Christy Morgan
"Going into the game we knew it would be a battle. I know the coach very well – I recruited her to play at Wake Forest, I coached her for a few years and she's a dynamo. She coaches with a lot of energy and Kent State plays with a lot of energy. We were up for the battle, we sustained the battle and we won the battle."
How It Happened
- Strittmatter was tripped in the circle on a breakaway late in the first quarter to draw the Dukes' first penalty stroke. Roeper converted with a shot to the right of the goal to put JMU ahead 1-0 at the 3:41 mark.
- Early in the third period, Jansen covered the ball on an inlet pass from freshman Elena Giangaspero to give James Madison another penalty stroke attempt. Roeper snuck in a shot to the bottom left corner to extend the Dukes lead to 2-0.
- Strittmatter redirected a pass from Drexler-Amey in front of the KSU netminder with 3:46 to go to make it 3-0 JMU.
- The Golden Flashes drew four penalty corners in the final frame but were turned away each time as JMU secured the 3-0 shutout.
Game Notes
- James Madison leads 11-4 in the all-time series versus Kent State, dating back to 1986.
- The Dukes held an advantage in shots (13-10) and shots on goal (9-3), while the Golden Flashes drew more corners (6-3).
- The shutout was JMU's third of the season, having also blanked William & Mary (4-0, Sept. 15) and Queens (N.C.) (7-0, Sept. 29).
- JMU won its fifth consecutive game for the first time since 2022 when the team had a five-game winning streak from Sept. 10 through Sept. 25.
- Roeper is the first player to convert on multiple penalty strokes during Coach Morgan's second stint at James Madison (2014-Pres.). Additionally, the Delft, Netherlands native is the first JMU player to score multiple penalty stroke goals in a season since Hannah Hall went 4-for-4 in 2016.
