Alonza Barnett III Named to Midseason Watch List for Maxwell Award

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – James Madison quarterback Alonza Barnett III has been selected as a midseason watch list addition for the 88th Maxwell Award, which is presented annually to the college player of the year.

Through six starts this season, Barnett III has accounted for nearly 1,800 yards and 20 touchdowns. Entering the road trip to Georgia Southern, he's 102-of-177 (57.6%) for 1,472 passing yards and 15 touchdowns with only one interception. He's also added 309 rushing yards and a team-best five rushing scores.

Barnett III ranks top 20 nationally in four statistical categories, including seventh in point responsibility per game (20.0), 10th in passing touchdowns (15), 13th in yards per completion (14.43) and 20th in total offense per game (296.8).

The Whitsett, N.C., native has thrown for five touchdowns twice, highlighted by his JMU-record seven total touchdowns in JMU's 70-50 victory at North Carolina back on Sept. 21. In his last four starts, Barnett III has tallied 18 of his 20 touchdowns. He's also thrown for over 250 yards in three of his last four outings.

The Maxwell Award has been presented since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.
