HARRISONBURG, Va. – Junior
Coleman Calabrese hit a game-tying home run two innings before classmate
Jason Schiavone hit a two-run homer that gave James Madison baseball a lead it never relinquished to take down Fairfield, 10-9, on Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
The Dukes evened their record to 3-3 after the non-conference matchup, while the Stags fell to 0-4.
Â
Calabrese led the Dukes at the plate, setting career highs in hits and runs scored with a 4-for-5 effort, two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI's. The two homer performance is the infielder's first career multi-home run game. Redshirt senior
Hunter Entsminger earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief while senior
Joe Vogatsky earned a six-out save.
Â
How It Happened
First Inning
A three-run homer off the bat of Ethan Hibbard gave Fairfield a 3-0 lead less than three outs into the game.
Â
After a walk-off single in his last at bat, Calabrese hit a single again, this time scoring junior
Fenwick Trimble to get a run back and make it 3-1.
Â
Second Inning
Fairfield extended its lead back to three runs after a sacrifice fly.
Â
The Dukes made it a one-run game after back-to-back singles from Trimble and junior
Ryan Dooley plated runs to make it 4-3.
Â
Third Inning
Hibbard hit his second home run of the game to give the Stags another run at 5-3.
Â
To lead off the home half of the third, Calabrese hit his first home run of the season to bring it back within one.
Â
Fifth Inning
Identical to the third inning, Calabrese led off the fifth inning and put a ball over the opposite field wall to tie the game at five.
Â
Sixth Inning
The Stags quickly responded with two runs of their own to take a 7-5 lead, but the throw into home from center field on the single was rerouted to first base to catch TJ Schmalzle for the final out as he rounded the base too much.
Â
Seventh Inning
JMU took its first lead of the game with a five-run inning. Graduate
Brendan O'Donnell led off with an infield single and scored the next at bat as after Calabrese put down a bunt, a wild throw allowed him to advance two bases. Two batters later, Schiavone hit his homer to give the Dukes the lead at 8-7. A triple from freshman
Mike Mancini scored an insurance run before he touched home after a fielding error to increase the score to 10-7.
Â
Eighth Inning
A RBI single followed by a double down the right field line scored two for FU and bring it within one at 10-9. A grounder to first for the third out got the Dukes out of the jam.
