DADE CITY, Fla. – Kendall Turner and Amelia Williams used a strong first day of action on the Western Kentucky University Spring Break Shootout to lead the James Madison women's golf team to a third-place finish out of 15 teams on the par-71, 6,063-yard layout at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club on Tuesday.
Turner and Williams finished inside the top 10 as the Dukes finished inside the top three for the third consecutive tournament. The senior finished fourth out of 81 golfers with a three-round score of 207 (-6), her 18th career top-10 finish. Williams finished with a three-round score of 213 (E), good for a ninth-place finish.
Turner opened her tournament with a four-under 67 before closing with a 69 (-2) and 71 (E). Williams produced a ninth-place finish with a three-round score of 213 (E). As a team, JMU finished behind North Florida and hosts Western Kentucky, recording 42 birdies.
Williams navigated the Lake Jovita Golf Course masterfully on Monday, carding consecutive rounds of 68 (-3) and a career-low 66 (-5) in the second round. She closed the tournament with a 79 (+7) to earn the ninth-place finish. The senior led the team with 11 birdies, seven of which came in round two. Her first round of the Shootout featured an eagle on the 11th hole.
Kayleigh Reinke soared up 31 spots on the leaderboard Tuesday after shooting her tournament-best 69 (-2). The junior finished tied for 13th with a 54-hole score of 216 (+3) and her third-round 69 (-2) was tied as the best of the day across the field. She wound up with 10 birdies in the tournament, which was the second-best on the team.
Maria Atwood and Tatum Walsh rounded out the JMU contingent in Florida, as Atwood finished tied for 55th (226, +13) and Walsh tied for 62nd with a 229 (+16).
