Dukes Take First of Two Against Radford in Rainy Affair
3/26/2024 8:06:00 PM | Baseball
HARRISONBURG, Va. – In the first of two games this season as part of a home-and-home, James Madison baseball defeated Radford, 12-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park in a game that was ended in the sixth inning due to the rain.
Â
The Dukes improved to 15-10 and won their third game in a row in the all-time series against Radford, the first three-game win streak since winning five in a row from 2004-06. The Highlanders dropped to 9-14.
Â
Leading the way for JMU at the plate was sophomore Wyatt Peifer, going 2-for-2 with his first career homer and career-highs of three runs scored and four RBI's. On the mound, junior Casey Smith threw a complete game for his first career win. He went six innings and struck out four, both tying season and career highs. The complete game is the first for a Duke, regardless of length, since Justin Showalter tossed a seven-inning complete game in 2022 at Towson.
Â
How It Happened
Third Inning
JMU scored in three consecutive innings beginning in the third, as freshman Kyle Langley led off by drawing his first of three walks. The Dukes then strung together four straight hits, as Langley and junior Jason Schiavone scored off of a double from Peifer to begin the scoring. Back-to-back singles from sophomore Mike Mancini and junior Fenwick Trimble scored two more runs before junior Coleman Calabrese added his own RBI single to make it 5-0.
Â
Fourth Inning
Langley led off the following inning with a walk as well and came around to score on Peifer's 411-foot homer. Following the homer, the Dukes loaded the bases on two singles and a fielding error and proceeded to score three additional runs on a hit by pitch and two walks, all consecutively, to lead 10-0.
Â
Fifth Inning
With the rain coming down at this point, four straight walks to start the home half of the fifth allowed a run to score, ahead of a sacrifice fly from Calabrese to knock in another run for a 12-0 lead.
Â
Sixth Inning
Radford scored a pair of runs from a groundout and a fielding error to get on the board before the game was called due to the weather.
