BALTIMORE, Md. – No. 9 James Madison was unable to overcome a halftime deficit, falling short to No. 10 Johns Hopkins in a 21-13 loss on the road in Baltimore on Saturday.

Senior Isabella Peterson and redshirt junior Olivia Mattis led the Dukes' scoring efforts as each notched a hat trick. JMU saw five other goal scorers and four players register assists, including three from redshirt junior Maggie Clark and two from senior Katelyn Morgan.

Clark secured a game-high six ground balls while senior defender Lizzy Pirisino and freshman defender Ava Bleckley each tallied three. Clark and Pirisino each caused two turnovers while Peterson and sophomore midfielder Lauren Savage each caused one.

Sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Boden made 14 saves on 47 shots faced, allowing 21 goals and posting a .400 save percentage.

Johns Hopkins saw four players register hat tricks, including six goals from Ava Angello and four goals each from Maeve Barker and Campbell case. Three other Blue Jays found the back of the net. Bailey Cheetham notched five assists while seven other players recorded at least one assist on the day.

The Blue Jays' defensive efforts were led by Jordan Carr with five ground balls and Cheetham with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Madison Doucette made 12 saves on 30 shots faced, allowing 13 goals and posting a .480 save percentage.

The Dukes were outdrawn by a 23-13 margin. Jennifer Barry collected 13 of the Blue Jays 23 draw controls while sophomore attacker Maddie Epke and Peterson collected six and four, respectively, for the Dukes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – Johns Hopkins 6, James Madison 3
Johns Hopkins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Epke responded with a quick goal for the Dukes. The Blue Jays answered with their third goal of the day followed by two scores from JMU to tie the game at three with 5:06 to play in the first quarter. Johns Hopkins fired off three straight goals to close the frame.

Second Quarter – Johns Hopkins 13, James Madison 7
The Blue Jays continued their first quarter run with three more goals, holding the Dukes scoreless for 10:22 of play. JMU found the back of the net twice, but Johns Hopkins responded with three more goals. The Dukes scored the last two goals of the half with one each from Peterson and Savage. This was the most goals given up by the Dukes in a half this season.

Third Quarter – Johns Hopkins 17, James Madison 9
Johns Hopkins scored the first four goals of the third quarter with the Dukes scoring twice in the final 41 seconds. JMU was held scoreless for the first 14:19 of the frame.

Fourth Quarter – Johns Hopkins 21, James Madison 13
Mattis notched the first hat trick of her career with the first goal of the final frame. Angello rattled off two consecutive goals for the Blue Jays to extend their lead. JMU answered with three straight scores, but the Dukes' comeback effort ultimately fell short as Johns Hopkins scored the last two of the matchup.

GAME NOTES

Johns Hopkins trimmed James Madison's lead in the all-time series, 3-1.
The Blue Jays' 21 goals were the most the Dukes have allowed since their 21-8 loss at Florida on February 20, 2014.
The teams' 34 combined goals are the seventh-most combined goals in a game in JMU history.
Peterson notched her 10th hat trick in as many games played this season.
Clark secured a career-high six ground balls in the outing and recorded her first draw control of the season. Additionally, her three assists and two caused turnovers also tie her career highs.
Pirisino scooped up a season-high three ground balls on Saturday.
Savage's caused turnover and draw control were both the first of her career.
