NASHPORT, Ohio –
Garrett Kuhla and
Václav Tichý each notched top-five finishes to power James Madison men's golf to a second-place finish at the Virtues Intercollegiate on Sunday morning.
In a tournament that was shortened to 36 holes due to travel restrictions, Tichý finished with rounds of 71 (-1) and 67 (-5) to close with a 36-hole score of 138 (-6) at the par-72, 7,320-yard layout at the Virtues Golf Club. He finished tied for third, which matches his career-best (The Carolina Cup, 10/19/23).
Kuhla, a redshirt sophomore from Richmond, Va., finished one stroke behind Tichý as he finished his two rounds at 137 (-5). His score of eight-under 64 in Saturday's first round matched the program record for low round versus par. He finished tied for fourth in a field of 91 players, also a career-best.
Michigan took home team and individual titles for the second year in a row, as the Wolverines paced the field of 14 with a two-round score of 559 (-17), three strokes ahead of the Dukes (562, -14). Yuqi Liu won the individual title, going seven-under 137 in his two rounds.
The second-place finish for JMU is its best showing since also finishing second at The Carolina Cup on Oct. 10, 2023.
Daniel Cheng and
René Bergendi each tied for 13th place with 36-hole scores of 143 (-1). Cheng tallied rounds of 73 (+3) and 70 (-2) while Bergendi followed up a first-round 75 (+3) with a 68 (-4) in the second round.
Playing as an individual,
Suneil Peruvemba tied for 37th at 147 (+3) with rounds of 74 (+2) and one-over 73.
Tommy McKenzie, golfing out of the No. 3 spot, placed t-45
th after managing a 36-hole score of 149 (+5).
