Dukes Fall Short to ODU in Conference Semis

ROME, Ga. – James Madison's run at the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championship ended in the semifinals, as top-seeded Old Dominion used a pair of doubles wins and a trio of straight-set singles victories to down the Dukes, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Rome Tennis Center.

ODU (18-4) won its sixth straight against JMU (10-13) to advance to Sunday's conference title match.

The Monarch began the day with a pair of convincing doubles wins. On court three, Marina Markina and Kira Matushkina didn't concede a game, downing Hope Moulin and Sophie Williams, 6-0.

Minutes later, ODU captured the doubles point on court one where Sofia Johnson and Victoria Matasova defeated Daria Munteanu and Ines Oliveira, 6-2. The Monarchs also led 5-1 on court two.

In singles play, Lidiia Rasskouskaia, ranked 117th nationally, doubled the lead for ODU with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Oliviera on court three.

The top seed stretched the lead to 3-0 on court four, as Ulyana Romanova earned a 6-2, 6-3 win from Williams.

The clinching point occurred on court six, where Moulin battled tough in the second set before ultimately falling to Markina by scores of 6-1, 6-4.

ODU led on the three other courts, though JMU was highly competitive on the top two courts.

Both Elena Kraleva and Daria Munteanu were in tight bouts, as Kraleva trailed 24th-ranked Johnson, 4-6, 2-3, while Munteanu had the same unfinished score with Matushkina.
