HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison controlled the pace in doubles and won four of its six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 7-0 women's tennis victory against Richmond on Saturday afternoon at Hillside Courts.
The Dukes (4-6) won their ninth straight against the Spiders (1-6), as they have combined to outscore Richmond by a 26-2 margin over the last four wins.
JMU controlled the momentum from the get-go, winning on courts three and one in doubles play. The tandem of
Daria Munteanu and
Ariel Avidan cruised past Elizabeth Novak and Daniela O'Leary, 6-1, before
Brooklyn Hoffmann and
Sophie Williams downed Sofia Barbulescu and Abby Lee by a 6-3 score.
In singles play, Williams dominated on court three, taking down Lee, a 6-1, 6-2. Shortly after,
Anna Kantor rolled to her 6-3, 6-1 win against Beatriz Guerra on court five to extend the JMU lead to 3-0.
The final four bouts were all competitive, but JMU took control in third sets on courts one and four to clinch the win. Munteanu overcame a loss in the second set and rolled in the third to upend Barbulescu, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, to clinch the decisive point. Playing on her birthday, Avidan lost the first set but only conceded two games in the final two sets to defeat Lucy Webber, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Long first sets on courts six and two each went JMU's way and led to the match sweep.
Corinna Rietmann fended off Lainey O'Neil in the opening set before rolling in the second for a 7-5, 6-1 victory. Hoffmann closed the match by storming back in a first-set tiebreak and holding off Novak in the second, taking court two by scores of 7-6 (3), 7-5.
JMU is back on the court on Sunday, March 1 for a home doubleheader, hosting VCU at 10 a.m. and Towson at 3 p.m. Both bouts will be contested at Hillside Courts.
