BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. – James Madison dropped its Sun Belt Conference women's tennis opener to Marshall, falling 4-0 on Friday afternoon at the 7827 Tennis Center.
Â
The Thundering Herd (10-7, 2-0 Sun Belt) won the doubles point in thrilling tiebreak fashion and followed it up with a trio of straight-set singles wins on the top three courts to clinch the win over the Dukes (9-7, 0-1 Sun Belt).
Â
JMU's lone victory on any court came at court two doubles, where
Anna Kantor and
Reka Matko cruised to a 6-2 win over Sarah Copley and Nour El Ouazzani. However, Marshall claimed courts one and three, including the latter in a tiebreak to garner the doubles point.
Â
Marshall took a 6-1 win on doubles court one, and outlasted JMU, 8-6 in a court-three tiebreak, to win that match 7-6 (6).
Â
In singles play, the Herd doubled their lead to 2-0 on court one, as Johanna Strom upended
Daria Munteanu, 6-3, 6-1. The lead stretched on court three, where Alina Mokynska downed
Ariel Avidan, 6-2, 6-3. On court two, despite a comeback attempt in the second set by
Brooklyn Hoffmann, it came up short, as Polina Gumeniuk won the bout by scores of 6-2, 6-4.
Â
When the match finished, JMU led on court four, as
Mia Saveljic returned to the lineup and was up a set, while
Sophie Williams was down a set but up in the second. The final bout with Kantor had just begun.
Â
JMU returns to the court on Friday, April 3 when it travels to Charlotte, N.C., to battle the 29th-ranked 49ers of Charlotte. The match is set for an 11 a.m. start.
