James Madison head coach Marlin Ikenberry has announced the addition of Kurt Fleming as a volunteer assistant coach on December 2, 2021.
“I am extremely excited to have Kurt join our staff,” Ikenberry said. “Kurt comes from a long lineage of baseball in his family and he will be a great asset to our team.”
In his first season with JMU in 2022, the Dukes went 27-26 while winning 12 conference games for their most since 2016. Seven Dukes earned All-Conference nods in Travis Reifsnider, Ryan Dooley, Chase DeLauter, Liam McDonnell, Kyle Novak, Trevon Dabney and Fenwick Trimble. The Dukes posted their second highest fielding percentage in program history while scoring the most runs in a season since 2013.
Fleming comes to Harrisonburg after serving as the USA Prime coach for the 14 and under team out of Charlottesville, Va. since 2019. Before that, he served as the volunteer assistant coach at Averett University for the 2015 season.
The Louisa, Va. native brings professional baseball experience with him to JMU, as he was drafted in the eighth round by the Atlanta Braves in the 2010 MLB Draft out of high school, where he had a football and baseball scholarship to West Point Military Academy. A career .244 hitter in the minors, Fleming spent three seasons within the Braves organization and made it up as far as Single-A. He then spent a year in the Seattle Mariners organization before enrolling at Clemson where he played a season of football during 2014.
The youngest of three, Fleming has always been involved in sports through his family, beginning with his parents. His father, Steven, has a long history in the baseball world. After getting drafted in 1975 by the Pittsburgh Pirates and spending six seasons in the organization, he became an assistant at Alabama (1981-86) and George Tech (1987-88). He then returned to Alabama to finish his Master’s in 1988 before beginning a 30-plus year career of being a pro scout, where he currently works for the Colorado Rockies. His mother, Kimberly, was a 23-time All-American swimmer at Alabama, where she was named Decade Female Athlete for the 1980’s and is in the Crimson Tide’s Hall of Fame.
His brother, Kyle, spent time in the Army before becoming an assistant coach at Delaware Valley University, where the 2022 season will be his first. His other brother, Kenny, started as a true freshman at Texas Tech before playing at Shelton State Community College where he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 2010 MLB Draft. He now serves as head coach at Averett in his fourth season.
Fleming earned his undergraduate degree in Apologetics from Liberty in 2019, and is currently working on his Master’s in Exercise Science at Liberty. He currently lives in Palmya, Va. with his wife, Emily, who is a former JMU graduate.
