Ethan Larsen finished his second season as an assistant field hockey coach after being hired on April 19, 2024.
In 2025, the Dukes went 12-8 (6-3 MAC), with five players earning All-MAC honors and two named all-region. JMU notched its first top-10 win since 2008 with a 3-1 victory over No. 8 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Dukes reached the Mid-American Conference Championship Semifinals, falling to top-seeded Miami (Ohio), 2-1. The team wrapped up the season 18th in the nation in goals per game (2.7), with Madelief Molier finishing 19th in Division I in goals per game (0.82).
In his first season in Harrisonburg, Coach Larsen helped lead the Dukes to a 14-6 (7-1 MAC) season that saw JMU tie for the regular-season title and finish runner-up at the conference tournament. Alice Roeper earned the Offensive MAC Player of the Year award as six Dukes earned all-conference honors, while Roeper, Skyler Brown and Cassidy Strittmatter all earned spots on the NFHCA All-South Region team.
Larsen comes to JMU after spending the past two academic years at Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, England where he served as head coach of the men’s 2’s team and assistant coach for the men’s 1’s team. Additionally, Larsen held the role of head coach for the L2’s, L3’s, L4’s and L5’s for Oxford City Hockey. During his time in England, a member of Oxford Hockey Club was named Men’s 1’s International Player of the Year, while in 2022 he was named Young Coach of the Year.
Larsen graduated from Waikato University in Hamilton, New Zealand where he earned a degree in health, sports and human performance with a minor in business management. He was a standout hockey player at Tauranga Boys College, being named vice-captain for Midlands’ U18 hockey team.
