Brian Phillips was hired on Dec. 17, 2018 as James Madison University’s Director of Strength & Conditioning.
Phillips rejoins Cignetti's staff in Harrisonburg after spending the 2018 season as Director of Sports Performance at UMass, where he worked directly with the football program. He previously served as Elon's Director of Strength & Conditioning during Cignetti's first year in 2017.
While at Elon, Phillips worked intensely with the football program and oversaw the sports performance efforts for all 16 varsity sports. He additionally designed weekly educational opportunities for student-athletes regarding nutrition, sleep and lifestyle habits.
Prior to Elon, Phillips was assistant strength & conditioning coach and lead of analytics at the U.S. Military Academy for three seasons (2014-16). In his role at Army, he designed and implemented speed, plyometric and conditioning for “skill” position competitors and also constructed modified training programs for injured student-athletes. Simultaneously, Phillips charted and organized data on student-athlete performance and wellness in his role with analytics.
Phillips also served strength & conditioning roles at Nevada, Idaho, Northeastern and USC.
Phillips earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Bridgewater State and a master’s degree in performance enhancement and injury prevention from California (Pa.)
