Jamal Powell, who was hired in March 2015, spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons as the offensive line coach with the James Madison University football program.
This past season, he helped guide JMU's offensive line to one of its best years in program history on its run to the 2016 national championship. JMU set several conference records, including marks for scoring (700), rushing offense (4,125), total offense (7,612) and first downs (380). Nationally, JMU led the FCS in winning percentage (93.3%), completion percentage (70.8%), team pass efficiency (181.69) and first downs (380).
The Dukes also ranked second nationally in scoring (46.7), fourth in third-down conversions (50%),fifth in rushing yards (275.0), sixth in fumbles lost (4), eighth in turnover margin (1.13) and 10th in turnovers lost (13). JMU's offense produced 18 100-yard rushing performances from the rushing attack, including Khalid Abdullah's 11.
Powell coached three players to all-conference status, including a pair of All-Americans. Mitchell Kirsch was a consensus First Team All-American at right tackle, while Aaron Stinnie was a HERO Sports FCS Second Team All-American at left tackle. Right guard Matt Frank joined Kirsch and Stinnie on the All-CAA squad, as he made the Second Team.
 
In his inaugural year guiding the front five, the JMU offense ranked second nationally in FCS in scoring (44.3) and total offense (528.8). The Dukes also led the nation on third-down conversions (54%), while also ranking third in first down offense (329), fourth in completion percentage (66.9%), seventh in rushing offense (273.8) and ninth in red-zone offense (89.4%).
 
JMU broke its single-game record for total offense twice during the 2015 season, gaining 713 yards in the season opener against Morehead State and totaling 729 yards in the win at FBS foe SMU. The line blocked for a rushing attack that gained 350 yards or more in four games, including 440 at SMU.
 
Powell coached redshirt junior Mitchell Kirsch to All-America status, as he was named to the STATS FCS All-America Second Team and the Associated Press FCS All-America Third Team. Redshirt senior Dominick Richards, the team’s starting center, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Football Team and was a FCS Athletic Director’s Association Academic All-Star.
Powell came to JMU from West Virginia State, where he was the run game coordinator and offensive line coach, as well as the program’s strength and conditioning coach. Before WVSU, Powell held the same title at Seton Hill University.
He has also had stints as a coach at Texas A&M (graduate assistant coach/offensive line), Centre College (run game coordinator/offensive line) and Southwest Baptist University (run game coordinator/offensive line).
During his time at Texas A&M, he coached three All Big-12 linemen, two which were selected in the NFL Draft. At Centre College, Powell coached 13 All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference offensive linemen, three of which earned All-South Region honors and one that was a two-time All-American. He also coached one all-conference lineman each at SBU and WVSU.
Powell spent time playing for four different professional football organizations, playing two seasons in the National Football League at center. He was with the Tennessee Titans in 2003 and the Houston Texans in 2004. Powell also played two seasons in the Canadian Football League for the British Columbia Lions and Hamilton Tiger Cats. 
A native of Houston, Texas, Powell played his college football at Texas Christian University where he was an All-American, First Team All-Conference USA selection and a candidate for the 2002 Rimington Trophy as a senior, as well as Conference USA's Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year.
A four-year letterwinner for the Horned Frogs, Powell graduated from TCU with a degree in speech communications and a minor in business. 
Powell and his wife Rachel have two daughters, Jaden and Ellison, and one son, William.
