Matthew Josephson is in his first season with the James Madison football program in 2026, as he serves as a defensive intern with the linebackers.

Josephson joined the Dukes after spending the 2025 season at Northern Illinois as a graduate assistant, where he worked with the defense and special teams. He assisted with the inside linebackers and was quality control coach for special teams, breaking down data and running the scout team.

He spent the 2024 campaign at Liberty as a defensive graduate assistant with the safeties, which also included the nickels.

Josephson spent three seasons at Coastal Carolina (2021-23) as a defensive graduate assistant, working with the cornerbacks in his first and third years and the outside linebackers in 2022. He was elevated to defensive analyst, working with the inside linebackers in spring 2024 before his move to Liberty.

Josephson was also a defensive graduate assistant with the cornerbacks at Coastal Carolina during the 2023 season and was a defensive analyst with the inside linebackers at CCU for the spring of 2024 until his move to Liberty.

He graduated from Coastal Carolina in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in sport & exercise science and later received his master’s degree in instructional technology in 2023.
