Sean Lockwood is in his first season with the James Madison football program in 2026, as he serves as the director of strength & conditioning.

Lockwood comes to JMU after spending the previous eight seasons on the staff at Michigan, where he was associate director of strength and conditioning with the football program. In that role, he assisted in year-round implementation of the strength and condition program for the Wolverines, coordinated an internship program and was actively involved in recruiting, which included individual and group presentations during official and unofficial visits.

He managed the departmental budget for Michigan football’s strength and condition and collaborated with the sports medicine staff to implement return to play programs for injured student-athletes. He additionally coordinated athlete testing and evaluation for Michigan Football Summer Prospect Camps.

Prior to Michigan, Lockwood was on the staff at Kent State for four seasons (2014-17), where he held numerous roles. After beginning at Kent as a graduate assistant (2015-15), he was elevated to assistant sports performance coach (2016-17) before transitioning into the interim head sports performance coach in 2017. In addition to his work with Kent State’s football program, he also oversaw year-round program design and implementation for the baseball, softball, field hockey, women’s soccer and track and field programs.

Lockwood began his career at Northwestern (2012-13) as a football performance assistant coach. He worked with the defensive line and injured athletes while with the Wildcats and helped design off-season speed and agility programs for the defensive line unit in 2013.

Lockwood was a three-year varsity letterwinner at North Central as a defensive linemen, where he played from 2008-11. An Academic All-CCIW honoree, Lockwood earned his bachelor’s degree from NCC in exercise science with a minor in business administration in 2012. He also received a master’s degree in sports and recreation management from Kent State in 2015.
