Solid credentials as both a player and a college coach are key ingredients that Jake Morton brought to his position as an assistant coach at JMU.  He joined the Dukes' staff soon after Dean Keener's April 2004 hiring as JMU's head coach, and he previously had been a four-year college and a six-year professional player.  In considering his JMU position Morton was enthused with both the opportunity to represent the university and to work with Keener.  ?JMU is a great institution; it has a great academic reputation; and I have a chance to work with a great staff here,? the 36-year-old Bowie, Md., native said of joining Keener?s staff. ?Dean is going to be a tremendous coach who is going to be popular in the business. Combining working with Coach Keener and working at JMU provides a unique experience for me.  "It's a great community," Morton added of coming to Harrisonburg. "We're definitely getting support. Every day we've got to get out there with our hard hats on and continue to work hard."  Keener always has been impressed Morton;s work ethic and background.  "Jake attended Gonzaga Prep in Washington, D.C., and has a real foundation for an area that naturally should be a fertile recruiting area for us," Keener said. "He has a real passion for recruiting, and it should show here in a short period of time.  "I was very excited to have Jake join our staff," Keener said. "He's a tremendous person and a great coach; those qualities make him a great recruiter. At the same time he is very good on the court with player development."  Morton came to JMU after being an assistant coach the previous four seasons at St. Francis (Pa.). He also has coached at Bowie State and has played professional basketball in Israel.  Morton is a 1993 Miami (Fla.) graduate with a general studies degree and while with the Hurricanes had 909 points, 245 rebounds and 194 assists in 113 career games. He averaged 10.4 points per game in Big East play as a senior; he earned Miami?s ?Hustle? award in 1989-90 and 1991-92; and he was named the team?s top defensive player during three of his seasons. He sat out the 1990-91 season with a knee injury.  A guard, Morton also was a team captain during his final two years at Miami, and he played in Israel for six years after graduating and until joining the Bowie State staff in 1999. He moved to St. Francis for the 2000-01 campaign and while there played a major role in recruiting Northeast Conference rookie of the year Darshan Luckey.  Morton began working as a Five Star Basketball Camp counselor and coach in New York in 1989, and he coached all-star teams that included Richard Hamilton, Vince Carter and Stephon Marbury.  Morton and his wife, Robin, have two children -- a daughter, Catherine (4/22/98), and a son, Jalen (3/17/01). Robin Morton is a biology graduate of Emory University and has a graduate degree in health from Maryland.
