A 2004 graduate of James Madison, John Trice joined the JMU men's soccer staff prior to the 2015 season. He was a four-year letter-winner on the men’s soccer team from 2001-04 and serving as a team captain during his senior year with the Dukes.
"It is tremendous honor to return to my alma mater as a part of the men's soccer coaching staff and I would like to thank Tom Foley for this opportunity,” Trice said. “My experience at James Madison University both on and off the field was tremendous and I look forward to working to continue the tradition of success of the JMU men's soccer program."
Trice comes to JMU from Greensboro College – a Division III program out of the USA South Athletic Conference in North Carolina – where he spent the last four years as the head men’s soccer coach while serving as the school’s Athletics Director each of the last two years. In his four years as the men’s soccer coach, Trice led the Pride to a 40-25-11 record while guiding Greensboro to a 12-7 record in 2014 with a 9-1 mark in USA South competition, winning the regular season title. The mark followed a 2013 season in which Trice led the Pride to the USA South Tournament title while going 13-6-2 on the season.
Prior to his stay at Greensboro, Trice was an assistant coach at High Point University in High Point, North Carolina, for three years. With the Panthers, he helped revitalize the program and culminated his tenure by helping HPU to a program-record 16 wins and a Big South Conference regular-season title in 2010.
Previously, Trice was an assistant coach at the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. In his lone season with the Crusaders, the team posted an 8-6-4 record while going undefeated in the Patriot League with a 4-0-3 mark to earn the regular-season championship.
In his time at JMU, Trice was a part of the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Tournament teams and was a member of the 2001 Colonial Athletic Association All-Tournament Team. A three-time Verizon Scholar-Athlete while with the Dukes, Trice was heavily involved with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at JMU.
“John is a hard-working individual with strong character, strong conviction and a tremendous amount of loyalty to the University and to the program,” Foley said of Trice. “He’s a tireless worker, very well known in the recruiting circuits and I think he’s going to give us a tremendous lift in a lot of different areas.”
A Chattanooga, Tennessee, native, Trice holds a USSF A License. While at Greensboro, he was a member of the coaching staff for the NC Soccer Fusion and was the head coach for the North Carolina Olympic Development Program. In recent years, Trice has served as an instructor at JMU’s Valley Soccer Camp.
