Nicolai Nonnenbroich joined the JMU men's tennis staff as an assistant coach in October 2015.
The 2016-17 season saw JMU men's tennis go 14-9 overall, reaching the Dukes' highest win total since 2009-10 when they went 15-10. JMU also went a perfect 7-0 at home, the first undefeated home slate since 2013-14 and the most wins at home in the last decade.
In his first season, JMU posted a 9-12 overall record. Sebastian Salinas earned All-CAA Second Team honors for his singles play as well as CAA All-Academic recognition. Maxi Branth and Tristan Stitt earned All-CAA Second Team Doubles accolades.
The Dukes followed with a 14-9 record in his second year on staff, reaching the Dukes' highest win total since 2009-10 when they went 15-10. The Dukes were seeded fifth at the 2017 CAA Championships and fell in the quarterfinals to fourth-seeded College of Charleston. JMU also went a perfect 7-0 at home, the first undefeated home slate since 2013-14 and the most wins at home in the last decade.
Nonnenbroich came to the Dukes after spending two years as the assistant women’s tennis coach at California University of Pennsylvania. He helped lead the Vulcans to back-to-back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships (2014, 2015) and a No. 1 Atlantic Region ranking, as well as an appearance in the 2014 NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. The 2015 Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Assistant Coach of the Year, he coached three players to top-35 national rankings in singles action and a doubles pairing to a No. 11 national ranking.
During his time at Cal U, Nonnenbroich also served as assistant director of Camp Winadu in 2014 and worked as a private coach for SC Riessersee Garmisch-Partenkirchen from Sept. 2011-May 2013. He got his start in coaching with the ISP Tennis Academy in Nice, France, during the 2009 and 2010 summers. He coached campers aged 10-25 of varying ability levels from 52 countries and organized them in both tennis and other outdoor activities.
Nonnenbroich played his collegiate tennis at UNC Asheville, holding the No. 1-3 spots in singles and No. 1-2 spots in doubles en route to First Team All-Big South honors in 2010. In France, he competed in multiple tournaments on the national men’s tour and, in Germany, he played at the No. 1 spot for SC Riessersee Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 2012.
After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Management from UNC Asheville in 2011, Nonnenbroich returned to France for his Bachelor of Science in International Business from the SKEMA Business School of Sophia Antipolis in December 2012. While coaching at Cal U, he earned his Master of Business of Administration, finishing his degree in May 2015. During the summer of 2015, he also became a certified tennis performance specialist by the International Tennis Performance Association.
Born in Germany and raised in France, Nonnenbroich is the son of two volleyball coaches. His father won multiple national championships in both Europe and Africa, and he is currently the head coach of the men’s national team of Cameroon. Nonnenbroich is fluent in German, French and Bulgarian, and he is currently learning Spanish.
