On Oct. 1, 2021, James Madison women’s basketball head coach Sean O’Regan announced the addition of graduate assistant Raven James to the coaching staff for the 2021-22 season.
JMU will be James’ first coaching position after a successful playing career at Villanova.
James’ playing career at Villanova included 107 games, 53 starts and 1,652 minutes, with 52 of her 53 starts coming in James’ final two seasons.
In 2020-21, James’ appeared in 22 of the Wildcats’ 24 games, starting 21. The point guard had 83 assists, averaging a career-high 3.77 assists per game. The performance helped Villanova reach the third round of the WNIT.
James’ redshirt junior campaign (2019-20) established her as a starting point guard, as she started all 31 of Villanova’s matchups. She set career highs in most statistical categories, including minutes (842), free-throw percentage (.763), season assists (107, which led the team) and points per game (5.5). James set a career high with nine assists in a Villanova rout over DePaul on Feb. 23, 2020. She also scored in double-figures four times, including a 20-point performance in the Big East quarterfinals against Xavier.
The Upper Marlboro, Md. native completed her bachelor’s degree from Villanova in 2020 with a major in sociology and a minor in criminology. She finished a certification in public administration in 2021.
James played high school ball at St. Paul VI High School in Chantilly, Va. There, she helped her team put up an astounding 63-5 record in three seasons and won back-to-back Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association state titles.
