Neal Shabestar joined the JMU staff in 2022 and serves as the basketball sports performance coach for both basketball teams.
Prior to arriving in Harrisonburg, Shabestar was the assistant sports performance coach at Colorado State University Pueblo for a year where he worked with football, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, men's basketball, and baseball.
Before his time with the Wolves, he served as an intern strength & conditioning coach at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and worked with the Virginia Tech football team in Summer 2021.
Shabestar also worked as an Intern Strength and Conditioning Coach at Youngstown State in the spring of 2021. Shabestar worked with a variety of teams but primarily worked with football, swimming and diving, track sprinters and distance runners, women's lacrosse, women's soccer, and women's volleyball.
At Youngstown State, he was charged with leading warm-ups, leading team lifts, and providing athletes with nutrition and hydration resources during and after practices for multiple sports.
Before Youngstown State, Shabestar worked at E.C. Glass High School as the defensive/goalie coach for the boy's lacrosse team while splitting time as a student-athlete at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Penn.
While coaching at E.C. Glass, he also served as the goalie coach for the girl's lacrosse team and the head coach for the boy's lacrosse team during the travel fall season.
While a student at Lebanon Valley College, Shabestar played on the men's lacrosse team for two seasons.
Shabestar graduated from Central Virginia Community College with an Associate's Degree in General Studies in May 2018. Following his Associate's, Shabestar graduated from Lebanon Valley with a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Exercise Science.
