Stacey Matthiessen joined the James Madison coaching staff prior to the 2014 season after serving as a goalkeepers coach over the last five years at Old Dominion and Indiana.
Matthiessen helped lead the Dukes to the fourth CAA Championship and 11th NCAA Tournament in program history in 2015.
“I’m delighted to have Stacey join our staff," JMU head coach Dave Lombardo said when Matthiessen was hired. "She brings a wealth of knowledge from the DI world and has had some strong experiences at both Indiana and ODU. She has proven to be an outstanding goalkeeper coach and is proficient with training defenses. She will be a strong addition to our staff."
At Old Dominion, where she stayed for two years from 2012-2013, Matthiessen helped guide the Monarchs through their inaugural season in Conference USA in 2013. Goalkeeper Meredith Lennox made four saves to post a shutout in the program's first-ever win in the conference. During her first season as the goalkeepers coach at ODU when the Monarchs were still in the CAA, the team tied for the conference lead with 129 saves.
“Her knowledge of JMU, the CAA and the Mid-Atlantic region made her an obvious choice for us,” Lombardo said. “She will be up to speed very quickly with our recruiting, already having connections with many club coaches from within our region and around the country. She is also very familiar with many of our CAA and regional opponents.”
In just her first season at Indiana, Matthiessen guided the Hoosiers’ goalkeepers to a 1.09 goals against average, including a 0.57 GAA by Lindsay Campbell to set a single-season program record. Campbell also tied for second all-time with seven shutouts.
Matthiessen finished her collegiate playing career at Chattanooga as one of the program’s all-time best goalies. In 90 games played, including 85 starts, she set school records in wins (30) and shutouts (15), and finished second in school history with 356 saves and a 1.41 goals against average. As a senior, she earned First Team All-Southern Conference honors after finishing fourth in the nation in saves per game.
A standout performer in the classroom during her days as a student-athlete, Matthiessen earned a spot on the Dean’s List and on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll in each of her four seasons with the Mocs.
Following her collegiate career, Matthiessen went on to play two seasons of semi-professional soccer. She played one year with the Arizona Heatwave and one season with Aland United.
Matthiessen received her bachelor's degree in business in 2008 from Chattanooga with a concentration in marketing and a minor in psychology.
