mitchejt@jmu.edu John Mitchem came to JMU in 2007, joining the women's volleyball program right at the start of preseason workouts.
Garner said of the hire, “At such late notice, I’m really happy and pleased to be able to add John to our staff. Being a former head coach at the Division III level, he understands everything that goes into coaching and what goes into each role, whether head coach or assistant coach. We’re looking forward to what his experience brings to the table, particularly during matches.”
Mitchem joins the Dukes after two seasons at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton. As head coach, he guided the Fighting Squirrels to their first Atlantic Womens Colleges Conference championship in 10 years and their first NCAA appearance.
In addition to his stint at MBC, Mitchem currently works with the Charlottesville Area Volleyball Club 18s team. He also coached the Blue Ridge juniors team from 2002 to 2005.\
Mitchem commented, “I am excited about the opportunity to be a part of Coach Garner’s staff here at James Madison. I look forward to helping the team make a run at the CAA Championship.”
A 1999 graduate of Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., Mitchem is currently pursuing his masters in athletic administration at JMU. He completed the USA Volleyball Coaching Accreditation Program (CAP) in 2002 and received his Athletic Trainer Certification as part of his undergraduate sports medicine program in 1999.
