Michael Henchy joined the JMU volleyball coaching staff in July of 2021. He has been instrumental in the program's success in his three seasons which has seen the Dukes transition from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) to the Sun Belt. During his time on JMU's staff, the Dukes have compiled a 62-22 (.738) record and made two appearances in the Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, along with numerous players picking up major awards.
In 2023, JMU finished 21-10 and earned the program's first at-large bid in the NCAA Championship while also winning 20 games for the second consecutive season. In the Dukes' first season in the Sun Belt, Henchy helped guide JMU to a 24-5 record, which included a 15-1 mark in conference play, taking home the Sun Belt regular season and tournament championships and earning an automatic bid to the Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. He also coached Sophie Davis to the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year award, while Davis, Miëtte Veldman, and Caroline Dozier earned First-Team Sun Belt honors.
In his first season with the program, the Dukes compiled a 17-7 record without losing consecutive matches. Both Miëtte Veldman and Sophia Davis received All-CAA and All-Region Honors, with Veldman earning conference Player of the Year. Veldman was also named VaSID Player of the Year for 2021, with Davis (First Team), Caroline Dozier (Second Team), and Savannah Marshall (Second Team) also receiving All-State honors.
Henchy comes to JMU after spending two seasons at American University, where he was the assistant coach for the women's volleyball program. Henchy helped guide the Eagles to their 16th Patriot League Championship in 2019. During his time with the Eagles, Henchy oversaw the data analysis for scouting matches and gameplay. He managed the budget for equipment, assisted with the travel coordination and day-to-day practice planning.
Prior to American University, Henchy was a graduate assistant for two years at Springfield College for the men's volleyball program. He was named the 2019 AVCA Division III Assistant Coach of the Year after helping guide the Pride to the NCAA Semifinals and finish with an overall record of 27-3. In 2018 he helped coach Springfield to the Division III National Championship finishing the season with an overall record of 31-2.
During his stint with the Pride, Henchy was the offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for the nation's top ranked Division III offense in 2018 that held a .372 attack efficiency.
A two-year captain and a four-year letter at Ohio State, Henchy is one of only 16 Buckeyes to reach 1,000 kills in his career (1,001) while finishing 12th in attack attempts (2,263), ninth in aces (88), and 16th in points (1,213.5).He was an AVCA All-American honorable mention selection his senior season, and is a two-time All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association selection.
Henchy played professionally in Lamia, Greece before returning to serve as a volunteer coach for his alma mater for the 2016 season. He was a part of the coaching staff during the 2017 Division I/II National Championship. He assisted with defensive and working to analyze the matches.
Henchy graduated from Ohio State in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in communications, including an emphasis in strategic communications. He earned a master's in physical education and advance level coaching during his time at Springfield.
Michael and his wife, Ally (Development Officer with the Duke Club) met while they were undergraduate student-athletes at The Ohio State University. In his spare time, he spends time working out with Ally and taking their golden retriever Scout on walks throughout Harrisonburg.
