Ryan Parker joined the JMU volleyball coaching staff for his first season in 2008, carrying an extensive resume of volleyball expertise and experience. The first year resulted in a 13-18 record for a young Dukes' squad.
“I am very excited about the addition of Ryan Parker to my staff,” commented JMU volleyball head coach Disa Garner upon Parker's hiring. “He brings a wealth of Division I experience to JMU. He has had great mentoring by two coaches whose teams have seen tremendous success in the top 25 nationally. He will bring a variety of new training ideas to the table as well as some key recruiting contacts. I am looking forward to Ryan hitting the ground running on the recruiting trails.”
Parker carries nearly a decade of collegiate coaching experience into his position at JMU. Most recently, he guided Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan. to a ninth-place national finish and a 40-8 overall record. That followed a 30-9 season in 2006 for the Cougars. He coached one Junior College All-American and eight all-conference players, including the Jayhawk Conference Libero of the Year both seasons. BCCC was a perfect 21-0 at home in two seasons.
Parker added, “I am very excited about this opportunity to be joining the JMU staff. I am looking forward to working with Coach Garner and the wonderful young ladies of the JMU volleyball team. There has been a lot of hard work put into this program and I am looking forward to contributing to the future success of the Dukes’ volleyball program.”
Prior to Barton County, Parker served as the top assistant at Utah State University for the 2004 and 2005 seasons. His stint with the Aggies was highlighted by a second place finish in the Western Athletic Conference in 2005 with a 21-13 overall record and runner-up finish in the conference tournament. Parker spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons at Wichita State University in Kansas and assisted at Cal State Bakersfield from 1999 to 2001.
Parker also possesses six years of scholastic coaching in the Bakersfield, Calif. area and guided four different volleyball club teams from 1997 to 2004 to an overall record of 110-11. Under his tutelage, 42 players secured college scholarships. His list of camps worked includes Arizona, Kansas, Wichita State, and CSU Bakersfield.
A three-year varsity men’s volleyball player at American River College in Sacramento, Parker finished his bachelor of science in physical education at Cal State Bakersfield while serving as a volunteer coach for the women’s program. He and his wife, Megan, have two children, Aubrey and Keegan.
